The sceencast was created using Camtasia Studio 5 by TechSmith. I have used several of these types of applications and so far Camtasia is by far the best – highly recommended!

Is it possible to edit without logging in as admin?
You may edit with any user account that is a member of the ‘Editor’ or ‘Publisher’ user group for the frontend. Alternately, if the user account is a member of any of the public backend user groups they may edit from either the frontend or backend login.

Ive been using JCE with for a while and it really works great once its configured and you spend some time with the UI. There is a lot of nice plugins for paid members in and I found paying for JCE was definitely worth it.
is this blog still alive? i have a question. Is it possible to have a frontend publisher with the login module? because my site does not require logging in, its like a catalog of a certain product. But, there has to be a publisher so that announce can be posted. please help
Sorry, I have to be somewhat critical. This seems to be yet another poor assumption post. I’m new to Joomla and trying to figure out how to do front end edits. You post should start by explaining how to configure a user to have that capability. I haven’t a clue, still wandering through the net hoping to stumble across good information on Joomla. Yes, I’m sure an experiences Joomla person takes it for granted but it’s truely awful how many Joomla sites don’t bother to be half way through in explaining a topic. This is just egotism. If the Joomla community cared about sharing information to actually help people they would take a minute to think about what do I need to convey to really provide clear, complete and useful information? I’ve only stumbled across one product/site in the entire Joomla world that obviously used compassion and intelligence to document their product. I’m not putting you down, i’m your best friend, you want to get better, think of what the other fellow needs.
@Paul – sorry it didn’t help you out. I created it for a client paired with some on-site training. Its included here just in case it might help others. You are totally right however, if this was meant to be more of a tutorial from scratch it should include setting up users and many other backend things that lead up to this point.
@starsky – You can publish from the frontend. You’ll need to set your user as Publisher or higher and link to a category page in the user menu. A new link will appear below the list of articles to add an Article. Alternatively, you can create a general link in the user menu to submit an article and the user can choose the Section/Category when they enter the content.
For some reason, when I edit from the front end, I don’t get the JCE editor. I just get a text area with html code in it. When I create articles using the article manager, it uses JCE so I know that I have JCE installed ok. Is this Frontend thing you’re demoing a joomla extension or just the frontend capability that comes with Joomla?

Something I’ve not figured out is how to create a new article using front-end editing. Let’s say I am building a blog- I use a category blog layout to display articles. I want to create a new article from the front end. Is there a way?

thanks for posting this great tutorial. I am still wondering about one thing: How can I activate the frontend editing functionality whithout having to login in the frontend. I have created a site for a friend of mine and he doesnt need a login box. When i log in as the administrator and switch to the frontend view the symbols for editing do not appear. How can I make them appear?

Hi Dustin,
I’m pretty new to Joomla, this page came up as the top rank when googling “joomla publisher frontend” (congratulations); referring to your answer to starsky re: publishing on the front end:

This made no sense to me. There’s no such option in the user manager. Alternatively, if you were referring to adding an ARTICLE > USER link in an existing menu, I still can’t see what you’re talking about. I’m interested in providing a link that a publisher can click on to display ALL articles that need publishing, no matter what category or section (or uncategorised) they currently belong to. Otherwise, going off your second suggestion, it just seems you publish only as you encounter them whilst perusing the site (which sounds too random to be true) and the universe hates randomness.
I know there’s a simpler answer in there somewhere, can you take a crack at this? Much appreciated.
@Paul: this is the second time I’ve seen someone vent their frustration at one individual who’s trying to help. Granted there’s a bit of a steeper learning curve to get up and running with Joomla, but there’s way more complex products out there with worst documentation, ain’t fair to be taking it out on guys like Dustin. There’s no conspiracy or elitism-by-design at play, just takes persistence (things finally clicked at 12:30am after three/four sleepless nights figuring all this stuff out). On the bright side, you were very nice about it (you should’ve seen the other guy).
